What is a Slot?

A narrow depression, notch, or opening for receiving something, such as a coin or letter. The program received a new time slot on the broadcasting schedule.

In gambling, a device that takes a bet and pays out according to the combination of symbols on its reels. Some slot machines are designed with a pay table feature that displays all possible winning sequences.

On most modern slot machines, the computer inside pulls a random number for each symbol on the reels and then cross references it to another table of payouts that tells you how much money you can win. The “seed” to this system comes from the exact millisecond you push the button that starts the machine’s reels.

On BigQuery, when a reservation has the assignment type ML_EXTERNAL, the slots that are assigned to it cannot be preempted by queries in other reservations. However, when you assign a reservation to an administration project that has baseline slots and autoscaling enabled, additional queries can use the idle slots in that reservation. However, any requests that have been unable to start because of the lack of idle slots in the reservation will queue until the currently running queries finish and the empty slots become available.
